What is the Team Composition & Playing Time policy?

The VP Hockey team will be comprised of 10 - 14 players (8 - 12 skaters and 2 goalies). The present intention is to run 3 lines (4 skaters each line) at each game.

Playing time is not guaranteed and will not be equal!

Varsity competition lends itself to an emphasis on winning, although the program will not sacrifice the principles of good sportsmanship to win or pursue victory at the expense of the welfare of the team members. Nonetheless, the majority of the playing time will be allocated to those players who demonstrate superior ability, along with outstanding work ethic, good sportsmanship, and a positive attitude.

There are no preset starters - every player has an equal opportunity to start. Final determination of the starters will be made by the coach, in his sole and absolute discretion. The starting lines can and likely will change throughout the season depending upon player performance, motivation, and attitude.

How do I get PE Credit?

The Orange Unified School District has approved VP Hockey as a recognized course of "private study" for the purposes of earning physical education credit. Participants who meet the necessary criteria will be eligible to earn 10 units of approved physical education credit per season (the equivalent of 2 semesters of PE). Private study PE Credit may be used in lieu of regular PE classes, or applied as elective credit for those who have already completed their minimum two year physical education requirements.

Limitations and Conditions:

  • Participants are currently limited to a maximum of 10 credits (1 year) of private study PE Credit, regardless of the number of seasons in which they participate in VP Hockey. Hence, all players will be obligated to  complete at least one year of physical education classes at Villa Park High School. All new players are strongly encouraged to enroll in and complete two semesters of physical education at VPHS during their freshman year.

  •  In order to qualify for PE Credit for a given season – a student must attend 90% of the games and practices. Excused absences will only be  those for illness, family emergencies, or school-related activities cleared in advance with the coaching staff or Team Manager. All players will be required to sign in at each practice and game in order to verify attendance. Players suspended from the team for misconduct or who become ineligible to play because of school suspension or expulsion will be ineligible for PE Credit.

  • The maximum "private study" credit available to any player is 20 units (2 years) regardless of the number of seasons in which they participate in VP Hockey. Any credits earned beyond the maximum 10 units that may be used towards VPHS physical education requirements will be applied as elective credit.
